What does Namaste mean?

Ever wonder what the heck does "namaste" mean?

Is it like "haveaniceday"?  .....Yes!  But better.

3 translations:

"The very best part of me acknowledges and blesses the very best part of you."

"I greet that place within you, which is love, light and life.  And when I am in that place in me, and you are in that place in you, we are not separate."

"My soul honors your soul.  I honor the place in you where the entire Universe resides.  I honor the light, love, truth, beauty and peace within you, because it is also within me.  In sharing these things we are united, we are the same, we are one."

It is so much more than a greeting, a hello.  It speaks to our connectedness through our unique beautiful souls, that all shine out light, love and life no matter who we are or how different we are.

So, next time you hear someone say namaste to you, accept their blessing and repeat it back to them to share yours.

Namaste,

Martina

Lise Marshall

Welcome Lise Marshall to the SoulShine teaching staff!

When Lise enrolled in yoga teacher training she wasn't interested in teaching, she simply wanted to learn more about this practice which was slowly helping her overcome limitations in her life.  It wasn't long however, before she knew she had to share what she was experiencing in hopes that others would benefit from the peace and joy yoga was helping her discover.

Lise completed her 500hr training at True Nature School of Yoga, with an emphasis in restorative.  Her approach is serene yet purposeful, challenging yet accessible, a celebration of the heart.  She is a spiritual activist who cannot wait to share the healing and transformative gift of yoga with you.

Apache Prayer

"Looking behind, I am filled with GRATITUDE.

Looking forward, I am filled with VISION.

Looking upward, I am filled with STRENGTH.

Looking within, I discover PEACE."

This "poem" offers great opportunity to acknowledge these things IN YOU: gratitude, vision, strength, and peace.

You can journal on each sentence,...

Looking behind for the GOOD and feeling grateful even if the experiences that rise up for you are ones you would judge as "bad", you can look for the good and the learning in them and feel GRATITUDE.

You can pause to look forward, and VISUALIZE where you see yourself in 3-5 years.  Aim HIGH with your VISION!  Write it down.

"Looking upward", you can reflect on what you call Spirit and realign with your STRENGTH by having faith and trust.  Journal 3 sentences on it.

Finally, you can pause with your eyes closed for a few minutes and DISCOVER the PEACE that is ALWAYS within you.   Notice how you feel when you are aligned with your center and write a few sentences again.

Use "I am" statements - they are incredibly powerful.  EnJOY!

Yoga is my home. The mat may not be my own and the studio may be a place I stop by in my travels. There may be no mat at all, simply a patch of grass or sand will do just fine. Yoga lives in my bones and runs through my veins. Even when everything in life gets mixed up and confusing, as is the nature of being this soul in human form. Yoga is my rock. The breath, the stillness, the dynamic movement, the intention to simply be...me. That is how I live my Yoga.

Positive Self-Esteem Tips

-Spend some time getting to know yourself.  Of course reflect, but more so - go out into the world and take part in YOUR life!

-Take action!  Even small steps count.  Have goals, take a breath and move toward them.

-Take some risks!  Try something new.  Don't be afraid to jump.

-Stand up for yourself.  If you don't voice what you need and want it will make you feel worse.  Be assertive.

-Set personal goals.  Decide where you want to go and make a plan to get there.

-Learn from - but let go of - mistakes.  Everyone makes them; it's part of being human. If you don't stumble, you don't learn.

-Do things on your own.  Don't rely on others to make you feel good.  Have a healthy relationship with yourself.

-Don't compare yourself to others.  Judge yourself by your own standards, because you are unique.

-Associate with people who affirm who you are.  Take a good look at who you surround yourself with and how they affect your self-esteem.

-Practice positive affirmations.  Put some on your bathroom mirror and repeat them to yourself daily.  Switch them out frequently.

-Find things you enjoy doing.  Doing things for pleasure and challenge builds our sense of who we are.

-Use visualization techniques.  Conjure feelings of success and joy while visualizing something you want to achieve.

-Enhance your ability to cope with stress.  Develop ways to destress and practice them often.

-Shun perfectionism.  There is no such thing as perfect!  Forget the word even exists.

-Make a list of your accomplishments.  Include anything that makes you feel good about yourself.

-Live in the moment.  The past is gone, the future isn't even here yet - enjoy NOW.

-Do things for others.  Give your time, your company while honoring your boundaries - it makes you feel good.

-Take care of yourself physically.  Eat well, drink water, exercise.  Treat your body like the GIFT it is!  (and do yoga! ha!)

SoulShine News

Jason Crandell, a master yoga teacher, at the Yoga Journal Conference in San Diego. He reminds us,

"Sometimes students struggle with a posture because it challenges their strength. Other times, students struggle with a posture because it challenges their flexibility. What gets overlooked time and time again is that students often struggle with postures because they just haven't repeated them enough to truly understand how to do them. So, embrace repetition--it's how we all learn."

Welcome New SoulShine TEACHERS!

Iejnno Ortiz

Thursdays:

5:30am | SoulFlow

9:00am | Yoga Sculpt

Iejnno (Gino) approaches yoga to nourish the body, mind, and spirit with love and opportunity, on and off the mat. He has always been active and fascinated with many sports such as, Boxing, and Tae Kwon Do (receiving his first-degree black belt at the age of ten). The desire to find discipline and freedom within the body, Iejnno later found both through yoga. Introduced to yoga around the age of twelve, he then committed to his practice back in 2010 starting with Bikram Yoga, then discovered his true connection with CorePower Yoga in winter of 2011. The warmth of the community and support from the teachers guided him through a new journey, growing spiritually and finding his authentic self.

His passion is to instruct vinyasa flow, yoga sculpt and to inspire others as he was inspired. Discovering everyday his true authentic nature, Iejnno aims for anyone who practices alongside him to do the same and connect deeper within our own selves. In his dynamic and challenging classes, one can expect precise alignment instruction, uplifting humor and discipline to go exceed one's limits.

Cia Greene

Alicia (Cia) -RYT-500- took her first Yoga class in 1999.  After years of ebbing and flowing in and out of the practice, she found her passion in Hot Vinyasa and never looked back. Since then she has attended hundreds of hours of training, graduating at the 500 Hour Level Teacher Training Certification.  Her deepest wish is to guide her students towards expressing their authenticity by embracing self-acceptance, and holding compassion for others and themselves.  She is honored to have the opportunity to serve her community, through teaching yoga -both locally and internationally, and at SoulShine Yoga.

Grace Jessen

Wednesdays:

7pm | Yoga Bootcamp

Grace has always had a passion for health and wellness. Her personal yoga practice started at a Bikram studio over 10 years ago as a way to complement her other workouts and to balance the demands of a day in the corporate world.  Initially drawn to the fitness aspects of yoga, she later discovered it's transformative effects and profound benefits, not only to the physical body, but to the mind and soul as well. She later fell in love with the diverse, fluid and dynamic movements of Vinyasa yoga.

Through her practice Grace has seen many areas of her life impacted in positive ways and is blessed to have the opportunity to support others in their own personal journey. She received her 200 hr Vinyasa Yoga certification in 2012. She is Yoga Sculpt certified and is an instructor for Pound - Rockout. Workout™. Ayurveda in Daily Life

by Erin Easterly

The word Ayurveda has an air of mystery to its name. Most people have heard the word, but few understand the history, wisdom, and applications of this ancient health system. Deepak Chopra, for whom I work, has been instrumental in bringing the universal principles of Ayurveda to the West. He has written over 70 books on the topic and yet he himself acknowledges that he has only scratched the surface of the time tested traditions. This fact alone attests to the challenge of succinctly explaining Ayurveda when friends and neighbors casually ask, "What exactly IS Ayurveda?" I know that most people are not looking for a long soliloquy and yet all too often I find myself diving into the oceans of Ayurvedic wisdom long after my accommodating listeners have risen to the surface for air!

In an effort to introduce brevity to my admittedly long introduction of Ayurveda, I will here discuss just TWO foundational principles. Perhaps in future articles we can examine the numerous other roots to the tree of Ayurveda.

The first and arguably most defining principle of Ayurveda is that life has multiple dimensions. If I were to ask you if ou are healthy, you would most likely consider your odd and its current state of wellbeing. This is the model that most people use when evaluating their relative health or lack thereof. However, in Ayurveda, many layers of being are recognized and each must be addressed in order for one to experience wholeness, happiness, and true health.

The first layer is the body. What exactly is your body? At its most basic level, your body cannot be separated from the environment of which it is a part. The air you breathe, the liquids you drink, the food you eat all become your body.

In Sanskrit, the first sheath is known as annamaya kosha (literally, the covering made of food). The body also consists of the energy which animates your form (pranamaya kosha). This of this energy as akin to the batteries in a flashlight; you body is the flashlight and the batteries (or in this case vital energy) allow it to work.

The second layer consists of the mind, intellect, and ego with their respective receiving, analyzing, and defining qualities.

The third and subtlest layer, comprises your personal soul with its unique expression of Spirit, your collective soul with its unfaltering connection to archetypal energies, and the Universal Soul from which all beings are inextricably linked and birthed.

An obstruction of energy in any one of the layers of life results in less than perfect health. Ayurveda addresses each aspect of being and provides tangible steps through which one may reconnect to his native state of wholeness.

The second foundational principle is that of elements and doshas. Given that we are interconnected with the world of which we are a part, it comes as no surprise that Ayurveda recognizes the elements of nature with in our bodies and minds. Space, air, fire, water, and earth are found in varying qualities in each individual.

A predominance of specific elements within the body and mind is known as a dosha. In Ayurveda there are three main doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapaha that influence both physiology and mental predilections. Konwing how to balance your particular dosha through individualized diet, specific exercise, seasonal practices, daily routines, and sensory input is an invaluable contribution of Ayurveda toward balanced living.

These two foundational principles may being to give you an idea of what Ayurveda means. Look for upcoming workshops that offer you a deeper connection with these teachings at SOULSHINE!

**a note from SoulShine: Erin has worked and mentored with Deepak Chopra as an Ayurvedic Therapist & Lifestyle coach, yoga and meditation teacher, as well as Perfect Health educator. She currently works at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, CA where she is actively involved in teaching, lecturing, and helping guests to integrate the principles of Ayurveda into their lives.  She is working on her first book The Way of the Yogi which is scheduled to be published later this year.

30 Days= Habits

Research shows that if you commit to something for a 30 day period, habit forms. Habits can be good and bad of course, but let's focus on the good. If you could 'magically' establish any habit for yourself, what would it be? Take a moment to picture your life with this new Habit... How great will you feel! The most effective life-long change you can make is to learn positive, healthy habits.

We're starting our 30 Day Challenge on Monday, April 7th. Our challenge is to complete 21 or 28 classes in 30 days. For some, it will be the challenge of stepping up from 3 classes per week to 5. And for others, it will be the challenge of committing the time as family members are also affected by our commitments. Perhaps you will become a catalyst for change amongst others who could use new positive, healthy habits.

The SoulShine cOMmUNITY is here to support you! As we work toward implementing new habits in our lives, we may experience a wide range of emotions; fear, doubt, joy, and bliss. We'll keep each other honest and log our classes on the chart in the studio. Stay tuned for prizes  to those who finish! Take this journey with us and honor your Mind, Body & Spirit.

Details

-Every class offered at SoulShine can be used toward this challenge

-21 or 28? It's up to you! This is not a competition. What do you feel like you're ready for?

What the heck is Sound Healing?

Sound Healing also known as sound therapy, vibrational sound healing, or vibrational medicine. Everything that moves vibrates, from the smallest molecule to the universe itself. Every atom, molecule, cell, gland, and organ of the human body absorbs and emits sound.  When an organ or body part is healthy, it creates a natural resonant frequency in harmony with the rest of the body. When the vibration of a part of the body is out of harmony, we have dis-ease.  With dis-ease, a different sound pattern is established in the affected part of the the body. When sound is projected into the dis-eased area, correct harmonic patterns are restored.

Quartz crystals have many physical properties. They amplify, transform, store, focus, and transfer energy. Healing with sound is an ancient method that is finding its way back into our lives. Hidden away for centuries, they have only recently entered the Western world. Scientific studies show that sound can produce changes in the autonomic, immune, endocrine and neuropeptide systems. Their sounds have a profound effect on the brain, brain waves, heartbeat, blood pressure, and nervous system thereby reducing stress and providing an increased sense of well-being. The cells of a person’s body sense the vibration of the bowls, which stimulates them to vibrate at their optimal rate. The energy blocks in the body occur at places of trauma or stress. The bowls’ vibrations pull the tangled blocks down and out the body. During singing bowl sessions it is not unusual for people to experience whirling sensations in various places on their body. These areas will be found to correspond to the chakra energy centers of the subtle body. Used in the right way, singing bowls bring one in contact with the inner self and the world of the sacred, where all the seeds and potentials of present and future growth are available for those who choose to enter.

What is Oil Pulling & Why are we Obsessed?

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that dates back thousands of years.

Let’s take a step backwards. What is Ayurvedic? Ayurvedic is the traditional Hindu system of medicine. It is based on the practice of finding balance in bodily systems and uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing to achieve it.

Now that we have that out of the way, what is oil pulling? It is actually an extremely simple process.  Oil pulling or oil swishing is a traditional folk remedy that involves swishing oil in the mouth. Essentially you swish and gargle oil, much like you would mouthwash, but for a much longer time.

Rumi Poem

"At night, I open the window and ask the moon to come and press its face against mine. Breath into me.  Close the language-door and open the love-window.  The moon won't use the door, only the window."

I love this poem.  I love the moon.  Symbolically, it stands for the emotional body and intuition. To me, Rumi is suggesting tuning into, embracing, and speaking through the heart and its language... and quieting the logical mind.
