Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that dates back thousands of years.
Let’s take a step backwards. What is Ayurvedic? Ayurvedic is the traditional Hindu system of medicine. It is based on the practice of finding balance in bodily systems and uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing to achieve it.
Now that we have that out of the way, what is oil pulling? It is actually an extremely simple process. Oil pulling or oil swishing is a traditional folk remedy that involves swishing oil in the mouth. Essentially you swish and gargle oil, much like you would mouthwash, but for a much longer time.
How do you do it?
- Take a spoonful of coconut oil (or sesame oil) and place in mouth
- Swish forcefully around your mouth for 10 – 20 minutes. Do this while you are showering, getting dressed, etc.
- Spit out the oil into the garbage (Don’t spit in sink, it may clog your pipes!)
- Rinse with warm water
- You can brush your teeth now (if you would like)
Coconut Oil is mostly commonly used because Lauric Acid (about half of the fats in coconut oil) is proven to be antimicrobial. It can kill bacteria, viruses and fungi. The oil pulls toxins, bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts, plaque and more out of your mouth.
Many experts say it should be done first thing in the morning.
